Community Literacy Matters: The Little Free Library in Palm Center Community Garden

Imagiread is dedicated to community literacy development. Since 2015, we've focused on annual projects inspired by community feedback on reading habits and support services. The response has been overwhelming.

With partners like the Houston Public Library, World Book Day, and Arte Publico Press, we distributed over 7,500 books, highlighting a gap in culturally relevant literacy instruction. Our first initiative, "Pledge. Read. Win.," encouraged reading as a consistent habit, with participation from the Mayor of Houston.

National Family Literacy Month, celebrated every November, promotes daily family reading traditions. To further support the community, we collaborated with OHIP, the OST/South Union Health Improvement Partnership. OHIP addresses health disparities and fosters community relationships. In 2019, we partnered with OHIP to create a culturally relevant book nook at The Park at Palm Center.

Community feedback helped shape the book nook, and local businesses donated materials and services. The launch, initially scheduled for December 28, 2019, was rescheduled due to weather and took place on Valentine's Day weekend 2020. The Houston Public Library's mobile tech lab attended, and contributors were recognized by Mayor Turner's office.

Although the Little Free Library remains closed due to COVID-19, we continue to support local families with book giveaways and activities. We look forward to reopening safely and hosting virtual activities, including S.T.E.M/S.T.R.E.A.M programming and culturally responsive art.
