As part of Imagiread’s ongoing commitment to community literacy development, we partner with entities and organizations that share our educational values and principles. BSAM Houston, a local chapter of the Black Speculative Arts Movement, and Imagiread have been working together on an ongoing production that converges black thought, black education, and black futures.
As we move toward the chapter’s third annual conference (which will be invite-only at a local Houston art gallery in February 2021), we are commemorating how this year has brought our community closer with the recognition and celebration of Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday started by Maulana Karenga. We celebrate Kwanzaa each year to meditate on the principles of Kwanzaa!“~Schetauna Powell
This year the chapter is celebrating together, and kicking the festivities off is Imagiread’s Kwanzaa for The Makers Story. The story explores what each principle seeks to convey and how we can center the messages to create the worlds we envision for ourselves, our families, and our communities. Artivism Community Art and Afrocentric Communiversary follow with their intimate candle lighting ceremony via ZOOM. Please invite your friends, family, and community as we collectively consider how to uphold the principles beyond the 7-day feat.
